What is a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) System?
Suitable for new builds & existing properties and apartments, this condensation control unit ventilates buildings by bringing filtered air in through a central location. A PIV system is the ideal solution for condensation and mould issues in existing homes.

How a PIV System Works
The PIV unit draws fresh filtered air into the building and gently ventilates from a central position on the landing or central hallway. Stale, moisture-laden air is diluted, displaced and replaced with subtle fresh filtered air forcing contaminants out of the property through leakages or extract points in wet rooms (if applicable).
Benefits of Beam Positive Input Ventilation Units
Enhance your home’s comfort and health – explore the key benefits of installing a Beam Positive Input Ventilation unit.
Improved Indoor Air Quality
Constantly supplies clean, fresh, filtered air into the property - no need to open windows which often allow dust and other pollutants inside.
Health Benefits
Moisture laden air is diluted, displaced and replaced with clean filtered air. This promotes free air circulation, providing a significant improvement for asthma sufferers.
Reduces condensation, mould & musty odours
Providing whole home ventilation and condensation control, working to eliminate surface condensation, which causes mould growth.
Integral Pre-Heater
Designed to temper the incoming air during periods of low external temperatures to prevent the air falling below 10°C.
Help reduce fuel bills
Warm air within properties accumulates at ceiling level, this air can be up to 7°C higher than the air at floor level. The PIV unit helps to redistribute this heat around the home and thus reduce space heating costs.
Energy efficient
Powered by an Ultra Low Watt Brushless DC Motor, the Axco PIV units utilise the latest technology to ensure minimum energy consumption and long term trouble free life,.
Ceiling Air Diffuser
Exclusive to BEAM, our fully adjustable 4-sided opening modern slimline ceiling air diffuser distributes air evenly, without causing draughts.
Radon
Radon is a natural radioactive gas that comes from the earth and has been found to cause lung cancer. A PIV system dilutes the air entering the house and helps to reduce the amount of contamination drawn into the house.
Hours Run Meter
The hours run meter retains its memory in the event of a power failure and restarts at existing reading when power is restored.
PIV's for New Build Homes: Northern Ireland
The use of a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system may be acceptable as part of a ventilation strategy for a new home, but on its own, it does not typically meet the full requirements of the Building Regulations (Technical Booklet K - Ventilation) unless it is part of a carefully designed whole-house solution.
Depending on the airtightness level, room sizes and layout, it may be necessary to fit window trickle vents in addition to the PIV. In addition, it may also be necessary to install more than one PIV unit to ensure adequate ventilation.
PIV systems supply fresh air into the property, but do not provide mechanical extract in wet rooms, which is required by building regulations. To meet requirements, 2 options are available:
- Option 1: PIV and MEV – whole house mechanical ventilation solution without heat recovery.
A PIV can be installed alongside a BEAM Mechanical Extract Ventilation system. As well as providing fresh air into the property via the PIV unit, there is a continuous extraction of moist, stale air from the wetrooms via the MEV unit. This whole house solution results in fewer breakout points in the home (which would be caused if intermittent fans were installed), thus helping improve the energy efficiency of the home. It is also a quieter solution as there are no noisy intermittent fans installed.
- Option 2: PIV and intermittent fans.
Although widely used, this option would have several disadvantages. As intermittent fans run for only a short overrun period, there may not be enough extraction to prevent condensation, mould and damp forming (especially in well-sealed new builds). They are also often not turned on because of the noise, resulting in inconsistent air quality.
- Republic of Ireland:
PIV units are not classed under TGD Part F Building Regulations. Alternative ventilation solutions are MVHR and MEV.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some answers to your most frequently asked questions about our Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) Systems.
How does a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) System work?
A loft PIV unit draws air from the loft space and once passed through the filter on the unit, pushes the clean air into the house via a ceiling diffuser, typically located in a central location (I.e hallway or landing area). If you have a warm roofspace, an Airsource PIV unit may be required, which draws air in from outside.
Will a PIV System help with mould/condensation in my home?
A PIV system promotes free air circulation and eliminates or reduces surface condensation, which causes mould growth. However, you may need to take other steps to help reduce condensation.
What if my home doesn't have a loft space?
A Wall Mounted PIV is suitable for apartments/flats which do not have a loft space.
Is it expensive to run?
Because of the low energy fan inside, a PIV unit is inexpensive to run (approximately the equivalent of a 60w lightbulb).
