Emma and her husband Kevin had their hearts set on building the perfect modern-day farmhouse. After a few years of searching and buying the ideal plot of land close to family roots in Co. Cork, the couple began their build at the start of 2019 and moved in December the same year.

MVHR for Indoor Air Quality & Energy Efficiency

From the outset, Emma and Kevin had the goal of building to a passive standard, which meant meeting certain levels of airtightness and U-values. At this early stage they contacted BEAM and found that an MVHR would be the ideal solution to help meet indoor air quality standards as well as contributing to the energy efficiency of the home.

We researched early and once our house plans had been passed, we were in contact with the Beam team to get advice and a proposal. We chose Beam as they came highly recommended by our Architect, Engineer and Builder!”

Emma and Kevin spent much of their budget on the bones of the house, ensuring they had covered the following:

  • Triple glazed windows
  • 200mm of insulation, mixture of cavity bead and Kingspan insulation boards
  • Air-to-water system
  • Supergrund raft foundation

Achieving Building Control Regulations

All Beam MVHR systems are designed to meet Building Control Regulations pertaining to ventilation standards.

We went with a Passive designed and specified home. Due to the level of planned airtightness we decided to choose MVHR. Passive certified homes need to meet <0.6 air changes per hour @ 50 PA with Part L and BER – a lot of homes are less than 10 M3/HR/M2 @ 50PA”

After a few years settled into their new home, Emma has shared with us the benefits of a Beam MVHR System:

We have a Beam MVHR system and are absolutely delighted with it. The air is always fresh whether we open the windows or not. Just to dispel a myth – you can open the windows if your home has an MVHR system. I have scarring in my lungs and am usually on my 4th, 5th, or 6th antibiotics by March plus steroids. This year I’ve had absolutely nothing! We sleep better in the house too which is a major benefit and I do believe it is because of the MVHR system”
