Qualitrol Enhances Manufacturing with Upgraded LEV Systems
Operating in more than 93 countries, Qualitrol is a leading innovator and producer of monitoring equipment for the world’s electrical grid. Their Belfast manufacturing plant plays a critical role in producing highly specialised instruments, using proprietary technologies such as the fusing of dissimilar metals and precise thermal calibration.
Challenge: Expanding Capacity While Improving Workplace Comfort
Qualitrol employs a highly skilled workforce and is committed to maintaining a class-leading working environment. To enable additional production capacity while ensuring employee comfort, the company invited Beam to review and upgrade their Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems.

Solution: Bespoke LEV Design and Installation
Beam’s engineers designed and installed partial enclosures, carefully calibrated using mechanical, electrical, and pressure controls. Each system was set up to meet HSE 258 compliance guidance, ensuring effective extraction while minimising noise.
Tackling Flame Brazing Fumes
One of the key challenges was controlling fumes from the flame brazing process, which produces a large heat plume. Beam upgraded the existing LEV systems by installing downdraft fume enclosures, significantly improving fume control and operator safety.
Downdraft Enclosures with Electric Height Adjustment
New equipment included 1m and 2m downdraft enclosures with electric height adjustment, allowing operators to work comfortably in either seated or standing positions, improving ergonomics and productivity.
Results: A Cleaner, Quieter, More Productive Workspace
